What is a Surveillance System?

Video surveillance systems involve strategic placement of security cameras, monitoring motion and activity, generating alerts, transmitting footage, and storing that footage. Cameras can be both indoors and outside.

What is an IP Surveillance System?

IP surveillance is a digitized and networked version of closed-circuit television (CCTV). In an IP surveillance system, an IP camera records video footage and the resulting content is distributed over an IP (Internet protocol) network.

Cameras

Bullet Cameras

Bullet security cameras are a type video surveillance camera that is typically small and shaped like a rifle bullet shell or lipstick case. Smaller bullet cameras are typically the diameter of a cigar, but they are shorter. Sometimes they are referred to as lipstick cameras.

Advantages of a bullet camera

Mail advantages:

  • Longer range
  • Ease of installation
  • Indoor & outdoor use
  • Weatherproof
  • Night Vision

Mini bullet security cameras are excelling its counterparts as well when it comes to mounting options, not to mention the manoeuvrability.

Bullet cameras are versatile in terms of functionality when comparing with dome surveillance cameras. By the same token, bullet type cameras, technically speaking, could be IP bullet cameras or analogue bullet security cameras, and some of them could be packed with IR night vision or other advanced technologies like optical zoom, motion sensors or thermal sensors.

Even though being slightly less discreet or a bit intrusive, outdoor bullet surveillance camera are still extensively popular with homeowners. Because the visibility of bullet CCTV cameras could positively deter potential break-in in some scenarios.

Dome Cameras

Dome security cameras get their name by their circular, dome shape. The security camera is encased in a transparent protective dome. Although dome security cameras can be used both indoors and outdoors, many businesses including hotels, restaurants, and retail stores use dome cameras inside due to their discrete design.

One of the main benefits of a dome camera is that the dome can make it difficult to determine where the camera is pointing. In addition, dome cameras are generally more durable and resistant to vandalism as the camera lens is protected. There are also vandal proof dome cameras which are encased with durable covers that are resistant to general acts of vandalism. In comparison, bullet cameras can be knocked off or manually repositioned to point in another direction. The shape and design of dome cameras allow you to monitor a wider angle as the lens moves versus bullet cameras only point in one direction.

Advantages of a dome camera

Mail advantages:

  • More discreet – blends in with surroundings
  • Rotating camera & wide angle
  • Vandal resistant
  • Indoor & outdoor use
  • Weatherproof
  • Night Vision

Dome security cameras come in different shapes and sizes. Technically speaking, dome cameras could be IP dome security cameras or analogue dome security cameras, and some of them could be packed with IR night vision or other advanced technologies like pan-tilt-zoom features, motion sensors or thermal sensors.

The very element in the dome security camera design – dome shape launches it on a path to be multi-functional and flexible, which sets them apart from the bullet-shaped camera as bullet cameras are intensively targeting on certain designated patch of land.

Another reason for the popularity of dome security cameras is that they are not readily noticeable and conspicuous, which is particularly useful for the front door, church surveillance or places where you don't expect passers-by or visitors to be instantly aware of the existence or whereabouts of surveillance cameras.

Can I mount a dome camera on the wall?

Dome cameras are installed indoors or outdoors and can hang from the ceiling or be mounted on walls. Although dome security cameras are less visible, they are slightly more challenging to install than bullet cameras, although not by much.

Turret Cameras

A turret camera, also known as a mini dome, eyeball or flat-faced dome camera, has a ball-and-socket type of design. It is like a sliced sphere, which can be easily swivelled around in its "socket" once the base has been mounted.

Advantages of a Turret camera

Mail advantages:

  • Easy angle adjustment after installation
  • Insect-proof
  • No IR bounces
  • Can be installed both vertically and horizontally.
  • Less intrusive than PTZ & bullet cameras
  • Less intrusive than PTZ & bullet cameras

NVR

A network video recorder (NVR) is a specialized computer system that includes a software program that records video in a digital format to a disk drive, USB flash drive, SD memory card or other mass storage device. An NVR contains no dedicated video capture hardware. However, the software is typically run on a dedicated device, usually with an embedded operating system. Alternatively, to help support increased functionality and serviceability, standard operating systems are used with standard processors and video management software. An NVR is typically deployed in an IP video surveillance system.

DVR

A digital video recorder is an electronic device that records video in a digital format to a disk drive, USB flash drive, SD memory card, SSD or other local or networked mass storage device.

CCTV

Closed-circuit television, also known as video surveillance, is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors.

What is CCTV used for?

CCTV (closed-circuit television) is a TV system in which signals are not publicly distributed but are monitored, primarily for surveillance and security purposes. CCTV relies on strategic placement of cameras, and observation of the camera's input on monitors somewhere.

What is a hdcvi camera?

High Definition Composite Video Interface, or more commonly referred to as HDCVI, is a type of high definition CCTV. While it shares some similar aspects, HDCVI is a type of its own. Offering much more affordable HD security cameras and digital video recorders (DVR), HDCVI is absolutely something worth looking into.

What is the difference between a DVR and an NVR?

At the core, both NVR and DVRs are responsible for video recording. DVR stands for Digital Video Recorder, whereas NVR stands for Network Video Recorder. The difference between NVR and DVR is how they process video data. DVR systems process the video data at the recorder, whereas NVR systems encode and process the video data at the camera, then stream it to the NVR recorder which is used for storage and remote viewing. As DVRs and NVRs handle the video data differently, they require different types of cameras. Most NVRs are used with IP cameras whereas DVRs are used with analogue cameras. It is important to note that a DVR based system is a wired security system, whereas NVR systems can be a wired or wireless system.
